The West Region Today
The West Region is home to over 1 million residents who enjoy a variety of housing choices, an array of amenities such as shopping areas and community facilities and good access to educational institutions. It is also an established employment centre, with the Jurong and Tuas Industrial Estates providing ample employment opportunities. The region is well supported by an extensive transportation network, through the East-West and North-South MRT lines, Bukit Panjang LRT system, as well as major expressways like the AYE, KJE, BKE and PIE.
Also found in the West Region are extensive nature areas, such as the popular Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and a wide variety of town parks, neighbourhood parks and open spaces totalling 570ha, linked by 27km of park connectors. The Jurong Bird Park and Singapore Science Centre are among other recreational options available to families. There is also ample space for new residential, commercial and industrial developments.
The New Business and Leisure Destination
The next 10 to 15 years will see dynamic transformation in the West. The key development focus is Jurong Lake District, which will become the main commercial and recreational hub in the region. The Jurong Gateway will offer an excellent mix of office, retail, residential, hotel, entertainment, F&B and other complementary uses. Lakeside around Jurong Lake will become a major leisure destination focusing on edutainment and entertainment experiences for families with young children.
New housing will also be built in attractive and familiar places, and the mature estates will be enhanced. Community and recreational facilities will also be beefed up, and more greenery will be introduced. There will be more employment opportunities with the development of new industrial and business premises in Jurong and Tuas. Rail and road improvements will facilitate access within the region, as well as to and from the city and around the island.

Revitalising Mature Towns
New Homes in Great Locations
Prefer to live near your parents in a mature town? A mix of public and private housing will be built in Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang, Clementi, Jurong East and Jurong West. New homes with younger residents will also help revitalise these communities, while new facilities will make the towns even livelier. For your convenience, many of the new homes will be near MRT and LRT stations.
A Rejuvenated Clementi
Look out for a new and improved Clementi Town Centre, part of HDB's rejuvenation programme. About 400 new HDB flats will be built in the town centre as part of a 40-storey complex with all of the following under one roof:

• A new Clementi Library and Town Council Office

More Amenities for All
An Integrated Sports Complex cum Community Club
A new sports complex was opened at Jurong West in October 2007. Bukit Panjang will be the next to have its own sports complex. The new facility will be co-located with a community club in Bukit Panjang Park. This is another example of how various facilities and infrastructure can be co-located not just for greater convenience but also better use of land.
A SAFRA Clubhouse in the West
Singapore's largest indoor playground for kids and a gymnasium just for them - this is what the new SAFRA Clubhouse in Jurong West promises when it is completed in 2009.
New Hospitals in the West
MOH will develop the new Jurong General Hospital at Jurong Lake District by 2015. The hospital, with an initial capacity of 550 beds, will provide acute inpatient and outpatient care. There is also provision for a 200-bed community hospital next to the General Hospital.
Many Learning Options
More schools
There are currently 40 primary and secondary schools, two junior colleges and one university (Nanyang Technological University) in the West Region. Besides new schools to serve a growing population, there will be an exciting range of other educational facilities in the West.
ITE Regional Campus
Choa Chu Kang will bethe home of the second regional campus of the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). Able to accommodate about 7,200 students, the 12ha campus will be located opposite Teck Whye LRT station and will feature a convention centre with a 680-seat auditorium and 130 training workshops. The new ITE College West campus will cater to students interested in hospitality, culinary and automotive technology.
New International School
By 2009, the Canadian International School will join the ranks of schools in the West. The eco-friendly, all-purpose facility on a 3.3ha site at Jurong West St 41 will have capacity for 2,000 students and 250 staff.
New Campus for River Valley High School
Students can look forward to more choices when River Valley High School moves to the West in 2010. The new campus at the junction of Jalan Boon Lay and Boon Lay Avenue will cater to 2,500 students who will get to enjoy state-of-the art facilities including a performing arts theatre, special science labs and a hostel.
Easy links
A Smoother Ride
A series of measures will make trips to, from and within the West easier. For example, road improvements in Clementi, Jurong and Tuas will make for smoother, less congested travel even as the number of people living and working in the region increases.
New MRT line
By 2015, there will be more MRT options. The new Downtown Line 2(DTL2) will connect Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang and Bukit Batok to the city centre and Marina Bay. Instead of the current one hour, it will take only 40 minutes to get from Bukit Panjang to the city. There will also be new stations added to the existing East West Line to serve workers in the Tuas Industrial Estate.
A Seamless Commute
The land around Jurong East MRT station will be dedicated to high-density mixed use developments. Landscaped pedestrian linkways will connect the surrounding developments to each other, the MRT station and bus interchange. The result? A seamless and comfortable commuter experience.

Business Opportunities, Jobs Closer to Home
Jurong Lake District
The land around the Jurong East MRT station will be developed into the main commercial hub of the West Region. To be known as the Jurong Gateway, it will offer an excellent mix of office, retail, residential, hotel, entertainment, F&B and other complementary uses. When fully developed, the regional centre will have more than 750,000 sqm of commercial space and a working population of at least 40,000. Already, Jurong Entertainment Centre is undergoing redevelopment, and a new warehouse retail development known as Big Box, is under construction.
Next door, Jurong Lake will see a major transformation into a must-visit leisure destination for locals and tourists. It will be different from other tourism areas in Singapore. There will be the new Science Centre as well as other facilities such as hotels and F&B. Jurong Country Club will also be developing a new golf resort hotel.
More Land for Industry
An additional 2,500ha of industrial land will be opened up for development in the next 15 years to boost our capacity as a manufacturing hub. The new developments will be built mainly in Tuas, Jurong Island and Jurong Industrial Estate. JTC is also carrying out enbloc redevelopment of Tukang and Tanjong Kling to meet new business needs.
A Business-White site will also be introduced next to Joo Koon MRT station to optimise industrial land and provide industrialists with flexibility to introduce synergistic uses with their development. They will provide more jobs and investment opportunities in the West Region.
